Italy works differently

Most foreign companies are surprised by the same things. In hospitality they matter even more, because staff numbers change every season and every hiring decision carries rules you cannot change later.

📘Collective agreements set the rulesNational agreements (CCNL) fix minimum pay, job levels, working hours and disciplinary rules. Tourism has several, and choosing the wrong one is costly.
🗓️Seasonal staff have rightsSeasonal workers may have a right of priority to be rehired the following season. Ignoring it is a common source of claims.
💶More than twelve salariesEmployees receive a 13th and, under most tourism agreements, a 14th monthly payment, plus severance pay (TFR) accrued every year.
🏛️Registrations before day oneThe employer must be registered with INPS and INAIL, and every hire is notified to the authorities before the employee starts work.
⚖️Formal disciplinary procedureBefore any sanction other than a verbal warning, the employee must receive a written notice and at least five days to respond. Skipping steps can void the sanction or the dismissal.
🔍Inspections in peak seasonThe Labour Inspectorate and INPS check hospitality businesses often, and usually when you are busiest.

The campsite bought by a foreign fund

A foreign investor buys an open-air resort in Italy and relies on a general adviser. The staff transfer with the business, but nobody checks the collective agreement applied, job levels, seasonal workers' rehiring rights or amounts owed to employees. The problems surface in the first season, as claims and costs that were never priced into the deal.

An employment due diligence before signing would have brought those risks to the negotiating table, when they could still affect the price or the contractual guarantees.

Frequently asked questions

Which collective agreement applies to our hotel, campsite or restaurant in Italy?

It depends on the business activity and on the agreement the company adopts. Tourism businesses typically apply the CCNL Turismo, the CCNL for Campsites and Holiday Villages or the CCNL for Public Establishments (bars and restaurants). The choice affects minimum pay, job levels, working hours and disciplinary rules, so it is the first thing the Studio checks.

Do you only work with hospitality businesses?

Hospitality is the Studio's specialisation: hotels, campsites, holiday villages, restaurants, bars and beach clubs. The Studio also assists companies in other sectors, including retail, events and professional services, with the same approach.

Do you work in English?

Yes. Calls, written opinions, due diligence reports and summaries of Italian employment documents can be provided in English. Official filings with Italian authorities remain in Italian, and the Studio explains what each one means.

Can you work alongside our accountant, lawyer or payroll provider?

Yes. The Studio regularly works alongside the company's existing advisers, in Italy or abroad, and focuses on employment matters without taking over their role. If you prefer, the Studio can also run payroll directly.

Do you handle one-off cases, or only ongoing contracts?

Both. Every service is available for a single case, with a simple engagement and no minimum duration or automatic renewal. Companies with recurring needs can choose a seasonal package of hours or a monthly retainer.

How much does it cost?

Each engagement has a fixed-fee quote, agreed before any work starts and after reading your request.

How quickly will we get an answer?

Within 48 working hours you receive a first reply with an assessment of the case and a quote. Cases with close deadlines are given priority.

Do you only work in Venice?

No. The Studio is based in Venice but works entirely remotely, for businesses anywhere in Italy and for foreign companies and investors operating in Italy.

Is the information we send kept confidential?

Yes. Information is handled under professional secrecy and EU data protection law (GDPR), and used only to assess and manage your request.
